Vestibular fold

Plica vestibularis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The vestibular fold is a short, wide mucosal plica located cranially to the vocal folds, supported by the vestibular ligament and the cuneiform process of the arytenoid cartilage. It contains a few elastic fibres and extends from the enlarged ventral edge of the cuneiform process to the cranial dorsal surface of the thyroid cartilage.

The vestibular fold is described in dogs and horses and is absent in ruminants and pigs. In cats, where the cuneiform process is absent, the vestibular fold is a mucosal fold.
