Anserine bursa

Bursa anserina

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The anserine bursa is an anatomical structure located on the medial side of the knee, specifically between the pes anserinus tendons and the medial collateral ligament of the tibia. The bursa functions to reduce friction between these tendons and the underlying structures during knee movement.

The anserine bursa is situated approximately 4 to 5 cm below the joint line of the knee and is superficial to superficial layer of the medial collateral ligament. It is lined with a synovial membrane, which allows it to facilitate smooth movement of the tendons over the bone. This bursa can become inflamed, leading to a condition known as anserine bursitis, which is often associated with osteoarthritis and overuse injuries.[1-2]

The anserine bursa is often distinct from the subtendinous bursae of sartorius muscle situated posterosuperiorly.
