Subtendinous prepatellar bursa

Bursa subtendinea prepatellaris

  • Latin synonym: Bursa subtendinea praepatellaris

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The subtendinous prepatellar bursa is not recognized in the medical literature but listed in the Terminologia Anatomica.

According to the study by Dye et al., dissections of 61 human cadaver knees revealed no evidence of a prepatellar subtendinous bursa. Instead, the study identified three prepatellar bursae: the prepatellar subcutaneous bursa, the prepatellar subfascial bursa, and the prepatellar subaponeurotic bursa. These findings contradict traditional anatomical descriptions, which inaccurately describe the presence of a prepatellar subtendinous bursa. Therefore, the concept of a subtendinous prepatellar bursa is not supported by current anatomical evidence.[1]
