The intermuscular gluteal bursae (Gluteofemoral bursae) are 2-3 bursae that extend inferiorly from the gluteus maximus to the linea aspera. They are situated caudal to the greater trochanter and lies beneath, and adhered to, the iliotibial band in the area where the tendinous fibers of gluteus maximus inserts. It is positioned over the posterior edge of the vastus lateralis, separating it from the iliotibial band.
