Branches of hepatic portal vein
Rami venae portae hepatis
Definition
The hepatic portal vein typically divides into two main branches in approximately 88% of cases. [1-3]
The right branch of hepatic portal vein (right portal vein) further subdivides into the anterior and posterior segmental branches, which then divide into superior and inferior area veins.
The left branch of hepatic portal vein (left portal vein) has two parts: the transverse part and the umbiilical part. The left portal vein supplies segments II, III, and IV of the liver, with segmental branches arising from these two parts.[1][4]
In some cases, variations in the branching pattern can occur, such as trifurcation or quadrifurcation of the portal vein
