Definition
The tendon of the extensor digitorum brevis is composed by three tendons that extends from the extensor digitorum brevis muscle, located on the dorsum of the foot, and inserts into the dorsal aspects of the proximal phalanges of the second, third, and fourth toes.
From its muscle belly, three tendons emerge:
They pass anteromedially across the dorsum of the foot.
These tendons insert into the lateral side of the extensor digitorum longus tendons for toes 2, 3, and 4 (middle three toes) (1,3). The tendons blend with the extensor digitorum longus tendons on their lateral sides and contribute to the extensor expansions of these digits.
A separate slip of this muscle, the extensor hallucis brevis, often considered part of the EDB, forms an independent tendon that inserts onto the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux.
