Territory of the deep internal veins
Area venarum inferiores cerebri
Definition
The deep cerebral veins drain the deep cerebral structures (central/deep white matter, basal ganglia).
This territory includes other venous territoires of the brain:
The territory of the superior thalamostriate vein is variable but may concern the thalamus, internal capsule, globus pallidus and pericaudate white matter.
The territory of the basal vein (of Rosenthal): mesial temporal lobe, parahippocampal gyrus, uncus, and posterior insular region.
The territory of the great cerebral vein (of Galen): cerebellum, interpeduncular fossa, inferior horn of the lateral ventricle, medial parietal-occipital region, parahippocampal gyrus, midbrain, and choroid plexuses of the third and lateral ventricles.
