Anatomic tibial axis

  • Synonym: Diaphyseal tibial axis; distal tibial axis; anatomical distal tibial axis
  • Acronym: aTA

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The anatomical tibial axis is a landmark used to assess angular deformities of the tibia and provide guidance for corrections.

It is determined from a medio-lateral x-ray of the tibia. Positioning is considered satisfactory if the medial condyle and lateral condyle are superimposed.

The anatomical tibial axis is defined as a line joining the center of the tibial diaphysis (middle of the segment connecting the cranial and caudal cortices) at 50% and 75% of the total length of the tibial diaphysis.
