Mechanical cranial distal tibial angle

Mechanical cranial distal tibial angle

  • Acronym: mCrDTA

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The mechanical cranial distal tibial angle is a measurement used to assess angular deformities of the tibia and provide guidance for corrections. Is determined from a mediolateral radiograph or a multiplanar reconstructed CT images of the entire tibia. For radiographic evaluation, the dog is positioned in lateral recumbency and a mediolateral radiograph is taken: the view includes the tibia, the stifle joint and the tarsal joint: the beam is centered on the mid-tibial diaphysis with the stifle and tarsus joints both at 90° flexion.

The mechanical cranial distal tibial angle is the angle between the mechanical tibial axis and the distal tibial joint orientation line, at the cranial aspect fo the tibia.

The following results have been found for the mechanical cranial distal tibial angle in healthy dogs:

  • Small breeds: 91° [70–101] (Radiography) (Garnoeva et al. 2018)

  • Toy Poodles: 91.0 ± 4.6° (Radiography) (Yasukawa et al. 2016)

  • Small Breed dogs: 86.3 ± 1.5° (Radiography) (Olimpo et al. 2016)

  • Chihuahuas: 91.9 +/- 2.4° (Radiography) (Phetkaew et al. 2018)

  • Toy Poodles: 98.5 ± 3.8° (CT) (Yasukawa et al. 2016)

  • Chihuahuas: 94.9 +/-3.1° (CT) (Phetkaew et al. 2018)
