Cavity of pharynx

Cavum pharyngis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The cavity of the pharynx is an anatomical space common to both the respiratory system and the digestive system. Evans and de Lahunta (2013) roughly located the cavity of the pharynx from a transverse plane through the head at the level of the orbital openings to a simiar plane through the second cervical vertebra.

The cavity of the pharynx is divided into a nasal part, an oral part and a laryngeal part.

Constantinescu and Schaller (2012) stated that the cavity of the pharynx in domestic mammals do not correlate to those in man, extending from the base of the skull to the level of the sixth cervical vertebra, because "of the long soft palate and the more obtuse cervicocephalic angle in the domestic mammals".
