Definition

Each finger presents a dorsal surface (facies dorsalis), a plantar surface (facies plantaris) (termed solar surface in ungulates), concave in the direction of the flexion, an axial surface (facies axalis) turned in direction of the axis of the foot and an abaxial surface (facies abaxialis) turned to the opposite side (In equidae, these surfaces are simply called medial and lateral).
