Limibic dermis [Perioplic corium]

Dermis [Corium] limbi

Definition

Estelle Demange

The limibic dermis, also called the perioplic corium, is the thin band of dermis (corium) at the proximal border of the hoof, located beneath the perioplic epidermis (periople).

It is continuous with the dermis of the skin above and with the coronary corium below, and it contains small dermal papillae that support horn formation. Its primary role is to nourish the perioplic epidermis, which produces the periople—the thin, shiny, protective outer layer at the top of the hoof wall.
