Perioplic epidermis [Periople]

Epidermis limbi [Perioplum, Un]

Definition

Estelle Demange

The perioplic epidermis is the specialized epidermal tissue at the proximal margin of the hoof, forming the periople, which is seen as a thin, shiny outer layer covering the upper hoof wall just below the coronary band. It represents the junction between the skin and the hoof wall, and it produces perioplic horn, a soft, protective, moisture-retaining layer that helps reduce dehydration and cracking of the hoof wall.
