Parotid gland
Glandula parotis
Definition
The parotid gland is the largest and most superficial of the salivary glands in the dog. It is located in the retromandibular region, between the mandibular ramus, the base of the ear, and the superficial part of the masseter muscle. Elongated and flattened, it is partially covered by the parotidoauricular muscle. This gland plays an essential role in saliva production, particularly during mastication.
