Pedicle of vertebral arch

Pediculus arcus vertebrae

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The pedicles of the vertebral arch are short, thick projections that extend posteriorly from the vertebral body. They form the lateral aspects of the vertebral arch and connect the vertebral body to the laminae.

The pedicles serve as critical structural components, providing attachment points for muscles and ligaments, and forming the walls of the vertebral foramen through which the spinal cord passes. They also play a crucial role in spinal stability and are key anatomical landmarks for surgical procedures such as pedicle screw fixation
