Pedicle of vertebral arch

Pediculus arcus vertebrae

Definition

Antoine Micheau, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The pedicles of the vertebral arch are the lateral and symmetrical parts that arise from the vertebral body. Together with the lamina of the vertebral arch, they form the vertebral arch.

The pedicles serve as critical structural components, providing attachment points for muscles and ligaments, and forming the walls of the vertebral foramen through which the spinal cord passes. They also play a crucial role in spinal stability and are key anatomical landmarks for surgical procedures such as pedicle screw fixation
