Temporal meatus
Meatus temporalis
Definition
The temporal meatus is the continuation of the canal of transverse sinus in the temporal bone. It is formed by the junction of the squamous part of the temporal bone and parietal bone, then between the squamous part and the petrous part of the temporal bone. It contains the temporal sinus and opens through the retroarticular foramen.
The temporal meatus is lacking in pigs, cats and humans and is large in other species, particularly horses.
