Infratemporal fossa

Fossa infratemporalis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The infratemporal fossa is the ventral extension of the temporal fossa. It is bounded rostrally by the maxillary tuberosity, laterally by the ramus of the mandible and the coronoid process of the mandible, medially by the pterygoid bone, and caudally by the tympanic bulla and retro-articular process of the temporal bone. Dorsally, the infratemporal fossa is bounded by the wing of the presphenoid bone, while the inferior boundary is less well-defined but generally includes the area around the mandibular foramen.
