Os pterygoideum

Definition

Mayla Alcobaça, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The pterygoid bone is a paired bone, composed of short, curved laminae. It is located between the sphenoid bone (basisphenoid and presphenoid bone) and the perpendicular plate of the palatine bone, precisely on the sides of the choana. It participates in the formation of the nasopharyngeal cavity, forming part of its lateral and dorsal walls.

The pterygoid bone contributes to the formation of the lateral boundaries of the choanae. It has free caudal and ventral borders and a hamulus at its junction.
