Basisphenoid bone

Os basisphenoidale

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The basisphenoid bone and the presphenoid bone form the sphenoid bone. These two bones fuse early in humans, but take a long time to unite in most mammals. Most often, they take longer to fuse together than the basilar part of the occipital bone and especially the ethmoid bone.

The basisphenoid bone has a median body and a pair of dorsally raised lateral expansions, called wings.
