Ethmoid bone
Os ethmoidale
Definition
The ethmoid bone is a very complex bone of the skull, which is odd and symmetrical. It is located inside the head, at the limit between the cranium and the face. It contributes to the formation of the rostral part of the wall of the cranium cavity as well as to the constitution of the bottom of the nose cavities. It is made up of 3 parts:
- The perpendicular plate: this thin and odd bone plate extends the septum of the nose caudally;
- The cribiform plate, one on each side of the perpendicular blade, which accommodates the olfactory bulb;
- The lateral masses, attached to the rostral side of the cribiform plate, consisting of a set of small horns or ectoturbinates.
