Retroarticular process

Processus retroarticularis

Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The retroarticular process is a bony protrusion of the temporal bone, located behind the mandibular fossa.

It acts as a bony stop, limiting the caudal movement of the condylar process of the mandible during movements of the temporomandibular joint. It thus contributes to the stabilization of the joint and the protection of the structures adjacent to the temporal region.
