Condylar process

Processus condylaris

Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The condylar process of the mandible is an articular bony projection located at the dorsocaudal end of the ramus of the mandible.

It bears the head of the mandible, a convex articular surface covered with cartilage, designed to articulate with the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone, thus forming the temporomandibular joint. This joint allows for the opening and closing movements of the mouth, as well as, depending on the species, translational and lateral movements essential for mastication.
