Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The wing of the presphenoid bone is a paired structure which, together with the wings of the basisphenoid bone, form the lateral walls of the cranium.

They are generally larger than the wings of the basisphenoid bone and are partially concealed by the temporal bone, forming a temporal surface. The remaining exposed portion forms the medial wall of the orbit, thus creating the orbital surface. Its dorsal portion is perforated by the optic canal.

Variation :

In dogs, they are smaller than those of the basisphenoid bone.
