Maxillary tuberosity

Tuber maxillae

Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The maxillary tuberosity is a rounded or irregular bony projection located at the caudal end of the body of the maxilla, behind the last molars.

It corresponds to an area of bony thickening that serves as a muscular attachment site for certain muscles of the pterygopalatine region, particularly portions of the medial pterygoid muscle, depending on the species.

It is also closely related to the pterygopalatine fossa and often has caudal alveolar foramina allowing the passage of nerves and blood vessels supplying the maxillary teeth.
