Greater palatine groove

Sulcus palatinus major

Definition

On the palatine/oral/ventral surface of the palatine process of the maxilla, the longitudinal greater palatine groove (Sulcus palatinus major) or palatine groove (Sulcus palatinus) begins at the great palatine foramen (Foramen palatinum majus) that terminates the great palatine canal at the margin between the palatine process of the maxilla and the horizontal plate of the palatine bone, on the transverse palatine suture (Sutura palatina transversa).

In Bulls, this orifice opens on the palatine bone itself and not on the suture.

In Bulls, Dogs and Pigs, it is accompanied by accessory orifices, the lesser palatine foramina (Foramina palatina minora).
