Tendinous cords
Chordae tendineae
- Latin synonym: Chordae tendineae cordis
- Synonym: Tendinous cords of heart
Definition
Tendinous cords of the heart (chordae tendineae), are fibrocollagenous, filament-like structures that connect the papillary muscles to the valve leaflets of the atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid valves). These structures function like the shrouds of a parachute, preventing the valve leaflets from prolapsing back into the atria during ventricular contraction
