Vortex of heart
Vortex cordis
Definition
The vortex of heart refers to the conical apical vortex formed by the helical left ventricular myocardial bands. This structure consists of oblique descending and ascending myocardial fiber segments that spiral around the apex, creating a vortex-like arrangement. The vortex of heart comprises two interconnected loops: an outer basal loop with transverse fibers and an inner apical helical loop that forms this distinctive conical vortex configuration. This architectural arrangement is fundamental to the heart's mechanical function, contributing to ventricular torsion (the "wringing" motion during contraction) and the efficient transition between systole and diastole.
