Vortex of heart
Vortex cordis
Definition
The vortex of heart is the swirling arrangement of cardiac muscular fibers at the apex of the heart.
It forms a complex, three-dimensional arrangement of myocardial fibers with a resulting blood flow patterns within the cardiac chambers, particularly the left ventricle. The myocardial fibers are organized in a helical or spiral configuration: in the helical ventricular myocardial band model, the ventricular myocardium consists of an outer basal loop of transverse fibers and an inner apical helical loop composed of oblique descending and ascending segments. These segments converge at the apex, forming a conical structure that facilitates the generation of a vortex during the cardiac cycle.
