Superior lingular vein of left lung
Vena lingularis superior pulmonis sinistri
- Latin synonym: Pars superior venae lingularis
- Related terms: Superior part of lingular vein
Definition
The superior lingular vein (V4; Superior part of lingular vein) is a pulmonary vein that drains the superior lingular segment (S4) of the left upper lobe of the lung. It is one of the two main venous tributaries from the lingular vein of left lung, the other being the inferior lingular vein (V5), which drains the inferior lingular segment (S5).
The lingular veins typically converge to form a common lingular venous trunk that drains into the left superior pulmonary vein, which then empties into the left atrium. However, anatomical variations are relatively common. In approximately 4% of cases, the lingular veins may drain anomalously into the left inferior pulmonary vein instead of the superior pulmonary vein.
