Abdominal part
Pars abdominalis
- Related terms: Abdominal part of esophagus
Definition
The abdominal part of the esophagus refers to the segment of the esophagus that extends from the diaphragm to the stomach. This portion is relatively short compared to the thoracic and cervical parts of the esophagus.
In dogs, the abdominal esophagus is characterized by its ultrasonographic features and its anatomical relationship with the gastric cardia. The abdominal esophagus and cardia can be visualized and measured using ultrasonography, which is useful for diagnosing gastroesophageal diseases.[1]
In cats, it has been observed that the abdominal part of the esophagus is very short, quasi virtual, and for some authors there is no distinct abdominal esophagus, as the entire esophagus is situated within the thoracic cavity, with the gastroesophageal junction located at the diaphragm level.[2]
