Body [Shaft] of tibia

The body (shaft) of tibia is craniocaudally compressed and presents 3 borders and 3 surfaces:

• Medial surface
• Lateral surface
• Caudal surface
• Cranial border (formerly known as the tibial crest)
• Medial border
• Lateral border (interosseous border, lateral border facing the fibula in carnivores, pigs and horses and attachment of interosseous membrane).

On the proximal extremity of the tibia is a cranial elevation called the tibial tuberosity. In pigs and horses, medially to the tibial tuberosity, is the groove of tibial tuberosity, for attachment of the patellar ligament (intermediate patellar ligament in horses).

In horses, there are numeral grooves on the caudal surface of the body of tibia, for attachment of popliteal muscle. The mediodistal border of this area is called the line of popliteus muscle and marks the limit between the popliteus and the flexor digitorum.
