The pars compacta is the dorsal and larger portion of the substantia nigra, containing dopaminergic neurons. It receives axons from the cerebral cortex, basal nuclei, and thalamus, and projects to the striatal basal nuclei to neuromodulate their circuits and facilitate movement.
