Costomediastinal recess
Recessus costomediastinalis
Definition
The costomediastinal recess is a subdivision of the pleural cavity, which is itself the potential space located between the parietal pleura and the pulmonary pleura. This recess is situated where the mediastinal pleura reflects to become the costal pleura. In cases of pleural effusion, it is one of the first sites where fluid accumulates due to gravity.
