Epiglottic vallecula
Vallecula epiglottica
Definition
The epiglottic vallecula is an anatomical structure located in the oral part of the pharynx (oropharynx). It is a paired space situated between the base of the tongue and the lingual surface of the epiglottis, on either side of the median glossoepiglottic fold. Each epiglottic vallecula is bounded laterally by a lateral glossoepiglottic fold.
The epiglottic vallecula is clinically significant as it plays a role in the swallowing process, acting as a space where food and liquid can temporarily reside before being directed into the esophagus.
