Eye
Oculus
Definition
The eye is the organ of vision, located on the face. Housed within the orbit, it consists of the eyeball (or globe) and the optic nerve, through which visual impulses are transmitted to the visual pathways and centers of the brain.
The eyeball is the primary organ of vision. It is enclosed by a spheroidal wall composed of three concentric layers: the fibrous tunic (sclera and cornea), the vascular tunic or uvea (choroid, ciliary body, and iris), and the inner tunic (retina).
These three tunics enclose several cavities and refractive media, including the ocular chambers and the lens.
The optic nerve is the sensory nerve of vision. It emerges from the eyeball and extends to the optic chiasm.
This anatomical organization of the eye is similar in humans.
