Habenula

Habenula

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The habenula is a diencephalic structure located caudally on the dorsomedial border of the thalamencephalon, composed of medial and lateral nuclei connected by the habenular commissure. It receives afferents from the limbic system, hypothalamus, and basal nuclei, and projects its axons via the fasciculus retroflexus to the interpeduncular nucleus as well as to serotonergic and dopaminergic nuclei in the brainstem.
