The thalamencephalon is the portion of the diencephalon mainly formed by the thalamus, which relays and modulates sensory, motor, and affective information to the cerebral cortex; the metathalamus, composed of the medial and lateral geniculate bodies specialized in hearing and vision, respectively; and the epithalamus, which comprises the pineal gland and the habenula, involved in endocrine and limbic-emotional functions.
