Subthalamus

Subthalamus

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The subthalamus is a region of the diencephalon located ventromedially to the thalamic reticular nucleus, dorsomedially to the cerebral crus, laterally to the hypothalamus, and rostrally to the substantia nigra.

It includes the zona incerta and the subthalamic body, as well as fields of white matter bordering these nuclei. This region plays a role in motor control and the suppression of involuntary movements.
