Internal capsule

Capsula interna

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The internal capsule is a thick lamina of white matter in the telencephalon that separates the caudate nucleus and the thalamus medially from the lenticular nucleus (putamen and pallidum) laterally. By traversing the corpus striatum, it divides its nuclei and accounts for the “striated” appearance of this structure. It contains the main projection fibers linking the cerebral cortex with the brainstem, spinal cord, and subcortical nuclei.
