Mammillary body

Corpus mamillare

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The mammillary bodiy is a small, rounded structure located on the ventral surface of the hypothalamus, posterior to the tuber cinereum and the pituitary gland. It borders the inframammillary recess of the third ventricle and is part of the hypothalamic system.

In humans, there are two mammillary bodies clearly separated by a median groove. In carnivores, the mammillary body is not truly double but bilobed. In equids and ruminants, it is single.
