Sternal ligament
Ligamentum Sterni
Definition
The sternal ligament is composed by fiber bundles that lie on the dorsal surface of the sternum. Theses bundles arise caudal to the first pair of ribs and broadens caudally to insert on the xiphoid cartilage in ruminant and pigs. In the horse, the sternal ligament divides into three branches, which insert to the last sternal ribs and to the xiphoid cartilage.
The sternal ligament is absent in some carnivores.
