Costotransverse joint

Articulatio costotransversaria

  • Related terms: Costotransverse joint (Costovertebral joints)

Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The costotransverse joint is the joint between the costal tubercle of a rib and the transverse process of the corresponding vertebra.

This joint is formed by the articular surface of the transverse process (the transverse costal facet) and the articular facet of the costal tubercle.

Variation :

In dogs and cats, from the eleventh vertebra onwards, which no longer has a transverse process, this joint no longer exists. The ribs therefore articulate only through the costal head joint.
