Costal tubercle

Tuberculum costae

Definition

Géraldine Lefeuvre, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The costal tubercle is a prominence located on the vertebral extremity of the rib, caudal to the costal head. It presents the articular facet of the costal tubercle, which articulates with the transverse costal facet of the transverse process of the corresponding thoracic vertebra.

Variation :

In dogs and cats, from the eleventh to the thirteenth pairs of ribs, the costal tubercle disappears and the articular facet of costal head fuses with the articular facet of the costal tubercle.
