Valve of coronary sinus

Valvula sinus coronarii

  • Eponym: Thebesian

Definition

Antoine Micheau

In domestic animals, the opening of coronary sinus is usually guarded by a small, variably developed valve called the valve of the coronary sinus (valvula sinus coronarii, homologous to the Thebesian valve in humans):

  • This valve may be rudimentary or partially absent in some dogs

  • When present, it is a thin, crescent-shaped fold of endocardium

  • Its function is to reduce reflux of blood into the coronary sinus during atrial systole
