Subfascial prepatellar bursa

Bursa subfascialis prepatellaris

  • Latin synonym: Bursa subfascialis praepatellaris

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The subfascial prepatellar bursa is one of the three prepatellar bursae located anterior to the patella. According to Dye et al., the soft-tissue structures anterior to the patella are organized in a trilaminar arrangement, consisting of a transversely oriented fascia, an obliquely oriented aponeurosis, and the longitudinally oriented fibers of the rectus femoris tendon. The subfascial prepatellar bursa is situated between the transversely oriented fascia and the obliquely oriented aponeurosis.[1]

Aguiar et al. further corroborate that the prepatellar bursa typically exhibits a trilaminar structure, with the subfascial bursa being one of the three potential bursal spaces identified in their cadaveric and MRI studies.[2] This bursa functions to reduce friction between the overlying skin and the patella, facilitating smooth movement.
