Definition
The trochanteric bursa of the gluteus maximus muscle (subgluteus maximus bursa) covers the posterior facet of the great trochanter and is located beneath the gluteus maximus muscle and iliotibial tract, and immediately superficial to the common attachment of the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus. This bursa can be identified on axial MR images as an elongated structure paralleling the posterior facet of great trochanter and usually it does not extend over the anterior border of the lateral facet.
