Definition

The clivus is a broad groove located on the dorsal surface of the basilar part of the occipital bone, in the caudal cranial fossa. It is located between the foramen magnum and the dorsum sellae.

It is connected to the brainstem and, in most animals, is divided into two parts, with the spinal cord impression and the pontine impression located rostrally.
