The costal part of the diaphragm corresponds to the second band of peripheral muscle fibers located laterally to the central tendon.

Origin: Ventral surface of the lumbar vertebrae.

Insertion: Internal surface of the ribs and costal cartilages.

Action: Inspiration.

Description: These muscle bundles are radiating and almost parallel. They arise from digitations that attach to the inner surface of the ribs and costal cartilages. Depending on the species, the bundles vary in thickness.
