Crista tentorica
Crista tentorica
Definition
The medial surface of the squamous part of the temporal bone shows a broad rough peripherical strip that is meant to respond to the adjacent bones and to the petromastoid part. This strip surrounds a concave and smooth concavity, the cerebral surface (Facies cerebralis), that takes part in the formation of the cerebral cavity's wall. The extend of the cerebral surface varies according to the specie: It is absent ni Bulls, where the parietal bone comes in contact with the petromastoid part of the temporal bone and the sphenoid bone, covering the medial part of the squama.
In Sheeps, Goats, Pigs, it is narrow, but covers the rostral surface of the petromastoid part and takes part in the constitution of the cerebro-cerebellar crest by a particular relief: the Crista tentorica that replaces the petrous crest.
In other species, the cerebral surface shows the impressions of the vessels and the brain's convolutions.
