Dorsal petrosal sinus
Sinus petrosus dorsalis
Definition
The dorsal petrosal sinus begins at the rostral end of the dorsal sagittal sinus. It passes ventrocaudally to the petrous part of the temporal bone and continues caudodorsally along the crest of the petrous part of the temporal bone, associated with the free edge of the membranous cerebellar tentorium. The dorsal petrosal sinus then lies on the lateral surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone.
Shortly before its junction with the transverse sinus, the dorsal petrosal sinus receives the ventral cerebral vein. The confluence of the dorsal petrosal sinus and the transverse sinus forms an acute angle ventrally, medial to the temporal meatus and continues into the temporal sinus.
